Sustainable Living Center
Coordinator Needed
~A 12-Month Caretaking Position~
Earthlands is a non-profit educational organization whose purpose is to maintain and operate a resident and day-use Sustainable Living Center that educates, informs, and models sound practices of global ecological living through the University of the Wild educational program.
There is need for one or two coordinators in a collaborative capacity to operate and maintain Earthlands’ Main Lodge at 39 Glasheen Road in Petersham, MA (North Quabbin bioregion) to support and develop its programs and services.
I. Facilities Responsibilities:
(1). Supervision of the daily caretaking of the Lodge, out-buildings, and grounds with attention to the local Board of Health requirements;
(2). Preparation of the Lodge and out-buildings prior to resident and day-use, including, house cleaning, sleeping room maintenance, cleaning and setting up the kitchens, and all else required by onsite programs using the facilities for gatherings and workshops.
(3). Community involvement and support through a.) assistance with food shopping, food preparation, and meals, b.) participation in community meetings and deep sharing circles, and c.) overall support of all residents, guests, and volunteers;
(4). Involvement in large team-oriented projects affecting the Center, including cordwood projects, facilities maintenance, and selected carpentry jobs;
(5). Managing of special seasonal caretaking responsibilities, including, snow removal, driveway maintenance, and water control.
(6). Stewardship of gardens, grounds, trails, teaching stations, and sacred sites;
II. Personnel and Visitor Coordination:
(1). Supervise and coordinate interns, apprentices, volunteers, and other workers;
(2). Interact with and support all resident and non-resident guests, residents, and volunteers;
(3). Understand and experience of all aspects of the community and educational components of the Sustainable Living Center and the program/service operation;
III. Educational Programs Assistance:
(1). Facilitate the organization of Thursday evening seminar program aimed to engage the local community in sustainability ideas and praxis: the 2006 Sustainable Living Series.
(2). Contribute to the development and management of Earthlands' caretaker programs and University of the Wild educational offerings.
(3). Participate in the development of the community surrounding the University of the Wild.
Time Period:
November 1, 2006 (or when filled) thru September 1, 2007. Flexible option to stay before and after specified time period. A year-long minimum commitment is required.
Compensation:* a modest stipend per month
* room and board for working a flexible schedule of 25-30 hours per week
* lodging in a small, private, wood-heated cabin
* office space with access to Internet (DSL)
* involvement in community meals, staff meetings, community gatherings, and University of the Wild programs, which may go beyond required weekly hours
*recreational access to over 1000 acres of conservation land
